Body

Your body is connected to your mind.

Body and mind do not exist as two separate entities. They work together in synergy. Something in the mind affecting something in your body.  Something in your body affecting something in your mind.

Medicine and hypnosis.

In 1952 Dr Albert Mason treated a fifteen year boy’s warts using hypnosis. The boy’s leathery skin looked more like an elephant’s hide than a human’s, except for his chest, which had normal skin.

Mason’s first hypnosis session focused on one arm. When the boy was in hypnotic trance, he was given the positive suggestions that his arm would heal.  A week later he returned and his arm had healed. Mason took the boy to the referring surgeon, who had been unable to help the boy with skin graft, who was astonished at what had taken place. It was then discovered that the boy was not suffering from warts, but from a lethal genetic disease.

Undeterred, Mason continued the hypnosis sessions and achieved similar results on the rest of the boy’s skin. The boy, who had been cruelly teased at school because of his disorder, went on to lead a normal life.

Mason and the boy accomplished what had until that time, been considered impossible.  It was a miracle.

Healing the body with the mind

How is it possible that the mind can fix the body? Modern neuroscience and MRI brain scanning are providing further answers. But there is so much more to learn.

The latest research in quantum physics shows that matter and energy are entangled.  Therefore we can apply this logic to understanding how the mind (energy) and body ( matter) are similarly bound.

Western medicine for hundreds of years has seen mind and body as separate and this belief still prevails today. Scientists have been trained to dismiss cases like the boy above, who used his mind to heal his body for centuries.

The fact is that harnessing the power of your mind can be more effective than taking any drugs, you have been programmed to believe you need.  Hypnosis, meditation, mindfulness are all techniques that enable you to harness the power of your mind.

Your mind ( energy ) has the potential to be a more effective means of affecting your body  (matter) than any external chemical.

Scientists most often deny rather than embrace exceptions.  In the nineteenth century a German physician, Robert Koch, who along with Louis Pasteur established the Germ Theory. This theory states that bacteria and viruses are the causes of diseases. Although this theory is widely accepted now, back them it was more controversial.

One of Koch’s critics was so convince that the Germ theory was wrong, that he drank a glass of water laced with the bacterium that causes cholera.   This critic remained completely unaffected by this dangerous disease.  The scientists back then, and still today can’t explain this, and choose to dismiss and ignore these exceptions.

More baffling to modern science, is the reality of terminal cancer patients, who have recovered their health through spontaneous remissions.  Spontaneous remissions get dismissed as unexplainable exceptions, or simply misdiagnoses.

Placebo

I’m not saying that simply thinking positively leads to physical cures. The conscious mind and the unconscious mind need to work together. What we do know is the unconscious mind is millions of more times more powerful that the conscious mind. If the desires of the conscious mind conflict with the programs in the unconscious mind, then there is going to be a real battle.

You can repeat the positive affirmation that you are lovable, and that your illness will go away. But if you grew up in a toxic environment and heard that you were worthless, unwanted and sickly, these messages will be hardwired in your unconscious mind and they will interfere with your conscious thought processes.

But you can change the way you respond to past environmental stimuli and change old behaviours and conditioned responses by getting the conscious and unconscious mind to work together.  Conscious and unconscious mind work together when we enter trance states, and trance states are the result of hypnosis.

All medical students do learn briefly, that the mind can affect the body. When patients get better by taking a sugar pill, medicine defines it as the placebo effect. The placebo effect is a much misunderstood and poorly researched topic. Modern medicine focuses funding and research, on drugs and surgery which leaves a whole area unresearched.

If the power of your mind, can heal and change your body, why should you got the doctors, or buy costly medicine or even have surgery.

Remarkable case study of the effectiveness of  placebo

In 2002, New England Journal of Medicine evaluated surgery for patients with severe knee pain.  Dr Moseley, who led the study, “knew” that knee surgery would help his patients. But Moseley wanted to find out which part of the surgery was giving his patients relief.

The patients in the study were divided into 3 groups. Two groups had different types of knee surgery. The third group got “fake” surgery. The patients were sedated, and standard incisions were made, but no actually surgery of the knee took place, even though Moseley sewed up the incisions as if he had actually done the surgery.

The results were shocking. Yes the two groups who recieved proper surgery, as expected, improved. But the placebo group improved just as much as the other two groups.

One member of the placebo group,  Tim Perez, who had to walk with a cane before surgery is noted for saying.

“In this world anything is possible when you put your mind to it. I know that your mind can work miracles”.

Studies have shown that the placebo effect can be powerful in treating so many things, pain management, asthma,  Parkinson’s, and depression to name but a few.

Irritable Bowels Syndrome

Nowadays there is no known cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome more commonly referred to as IBS.

IBS affects between 10 and 15% of the population.  According to this article on the BBC website, they are suggesting two theories for why hypnotherapy works for IBS.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3341093.stm

One is that by making people less anxious, it in some way makes the bowel less sensitive, thereby reducing symptoms.

Another suggests hypnotherapy may have an impact on a part of the brain which processes pain called the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC).

I believe that both theories are valid, but you need to add the placebo effect into the mix as well.  All in all that gives you a very powerful magic pill.

Hypnosis helps with so many body issues, from IBS, Child Birth, Pain Relief, High Blood Pressure, Infertility, Weight Loss, Eating Disorders. Look at the huge success Gastric Band Hypnosis is receiving in helping people lose weight, by tricking the unconscious mind into believing it has a gastric band fitted around the stomach.
